Grade 5 Lesson

The Holy Offering

When you love somebody, sometimes you have to do things you do not want to do. Imagine your friend is sad. Even if you would rather watch a movie, you might have to sit with them to help them feel better instead. A sacrifice is when you give up something because you love God. The Bible includes many examples of sacrifice. In the Old Testament, people would offer something valuable to God, like animals, money, or crops. You might have heard the word “sacrifice” during the Great Lent. The biggest sacrifice was Jesus dying on the cross, which we remember during the Divine Liturgy. In this lesson, we are going to learn how the Liturgy is connected to sacrifice.
