Grade 5 Lesson 8

Seven Holy Mysteries

Have you ever asked an adult a big question like “Where does the sky end?” or “How can God hear everyone’s prayers at once?” You might have been told, “It is a mystery.” Some things are too deep or beautiful to fully explain, but we believe them because God has told us.

Even Jesus did things his friends did not always understand, like walking on water or being transfigured in shining glory on a mountain. The apostles did not always know what he was doing, but they believed in him because they saw his love and power.

In our Church, we use the word Mystery to describe something holy that brings us into contact with God, even if we do not fully understand how. Particularly special actions of the Church are called Holy Mysteries, and they are uniquely powerful in our relationship with God.
