When we follow Jesus and keep his commandments, we walk in the truth, for he is the truth. He will never lead us astray. He also calls us to speak the truth at all times.
Have you ever seen a courtroom drama on TV? Witnesses are questioned. They must promise to tell the truth. What they say must be accurate and complete. It must really have happened. Telling the truth is necessary for justice. In the days of Jesus, two witnesses were needed before a person was found guilty. Justice was served if the two witnesses told the truth. If the two witnesses lied, an innocent person might be punished unjustly. When we tell the truth, we do the right thing for others. When we do not tell the truth, we hurt others. We also hurt ourselves because people no longer trust us. They cannot believe our words.
