Grade 4 Lesson

Following the Church

To live in God’s kingdom, we must follow the rules established by his Church. Following Jesus means following his church. The Church’s rules are not burdensome. Jesus gave us a new law, “Love as I have loved.” Does this mean Jesus put an end to the Ten Commandments? Not at all. Jesus said: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill” (Mt 5:17). Jesus also reminds us that if we obey his commandments, we will be the greatest in his kingdom (see Mt 5:19).

Christians are to obey the Ten Commandments. Why? There are many answers to this question. People obey laws for different reasons. Some obey out of fear. They fear they will be punished if they disobey. Jesus tells us to obey the Ten Commandments out of love. When we keep these laws, we show love for God and others. We also grow more holy.
