Grade 5 Lesson

Eucharist

Can you be friends with someone you have never been around? You might be able to talk to them on the phone or online, but you will never be really good friends with someone unless you spend time with them in person. The third Mystery of Initiation, the Eucharist, gives you that opportunity with Jesus.

After a person has been baptized and anointed with Chrism, he or she is invited to receive the Eucharist. The Eucharist is no ordinary bread. It is truly the real presence of Jesus Christ: his body, blood, soul, and divinity.

The fact that we eat the Eucharist is important, too, as eating with others is a way of saying, “You belong with us. We are your friends.” That is why we eat at important family gatherings like weddings, Christmas parties, and birthdays; it shows that we are a community. In this lesson, we will learn about the Eucharist and how Jesus invites us into a deeper relationship with himself and with others.
